What does the term "water column" mean? Visually, you can picture that a fabric with a 2000 mm water column level only becomes water permeable when 2 meters of waters are stacked on it. Of course in nature, 2 metres of water will never rest on a tent, which is why initially such a high level does not appear necessary. If you consider however, that water drops are pressed against the tent walls when it rains, it becomes clear that such levels are not exaggerated. The test for water resistance is conducted using water columns. A cylinder with markings is placed on a piece of fabric and filled with water. The figure up to which the fabric resists any water, is the water column value. According to the DIN standard, a value of 1300 mm water column is considered to be waterproof. This value can still be too low for rain jackets or tents that are additionally exposed to wind, however. A water column of 3000 mm is a figure that suffices for rain jackets and tents.
